Chris’s flameworking process involves using a glassblowing bench torch and a variety of unique hand tools. The ashes are first added to a pile of crushed colored glass called frit. A gather of clear, molten borosilicate glass (otherwise known as Pyrex) is then dipped into the mixture. The mixture is then encased in a heavy layer of clear glass using a scientific glassmaking process called imploding. The result is a stunning bloom of color and memory, trapped inside a memorial glass stone you can carry with you always.

My journey into memorial art began in 2011 with a phone call from an old friend. She shared the heartbreaking story of a young girl who had recently passed away and asked if it might be possible to incorporate her ashes into a pendant as a way to remember her. At the time, I had never attempted anything like it, but I felt compelled to try.
After weeks of trial and error, I finally created a piece that felt both beautiful and meaningful. When the family received it, their response was overwhelming. The comfort and connection they found in that pendant showed me that this was more than art—it was a calling.
Since then, Sands of Time has grown into a collective of some of the finest memorial artists from across the country. Together, we create one-of-a-kind keepsakes that honor loved ones, preserve stories, and bring comfort to families in their times of loss.
